Periodontal Maintenance

Diagram of teeth getting root planingFor many of us, we will make any excuse to avoid going to the dentist. Even though it is recommended to schedule an appointment at least twice a year for regular cleanings, most people avoid making any sort of visit. Perhaps it is an inconvenience, maybe embarrassment, or then again just a good old-fashioned fear stemming from childhood trauma, but for those who do not follow any routine for their oral care, they put themselves at a greater risk for periodontal disease. At Harry Albers DDS, we want to help ease the transition from dental neglect and introduce you to a healthy mouth!

What is Periodontal Disease?

First, you must understand what causes issues with your teeth. Your gums are the soft pink tissue holding everything in place in your mouth. Without regular brushing and flossing, food particles can build up in the gum line and provide ample nourishment for the bacteria naturally living there.

As the bacteria consume, it turns the sugars into a chalky substance called plaque. Excess plaque can cause inflammation and even infection within the pockets between your gums and teeth. When it reaches this point, it is called gingivitis, which is still easily treatable and completely reversible!

Without regular visits, however, the plaque can deepen the crevices in your mouth and can cause painful abscesses or even loose teeth that will eventually fall out. Once it has advanced to this stage, the gingivitis becomes periodontal disease and then becomes a chronic illness which will require more frequent visits to maintain, for the rest of your life. Why let it get to this point when it is so simple to prevent?

What Will Happen At My Next Visit?

Once you decide to make an appointment, we will give you a complete evaluation, including a thorough cleaning and x-rays. If you are concerned about pain, do not worry! We will be as gentle as we can with your tender gums. We will inspect, and if we see the first signs of gingivitis, we will let you know so you can begin the process of reversing the condition. If unfortunately, it has already advanced to disease, it is that much more important for you to make regular visits to help provide you with immediate treatment, so it does not get worse. Untreated gum disease can lead to a heart attack, stroke, or even cancer!

If you do have periodontal disease, we do have ways to repair your mouth to assist in providing optimal consideration for any concerns. We offer scaling and root planing, which will remove all of the vicious plaque growing around your gums and teeth to begin the process of eliminating any irritation. We are also able to supply grafts from your soft tissue in your mouth, which will grant your sensitive roots a place to reattach and keep the gum disease from getting worse and prescribe antibiotics to stop the growth of infection.

Many people suffer from periodontal disease and are not even aware of it. If you have bleeding or swollen gums, pain or redness, or maybe just really bad breath that does not seem to go away, please schedule an appointment with us here at Harry Albers DDS by calling (707) 806-0545 as soon as you can!
